Reviewer Applications v.2 / [Application] You want some eye candy?
« on: March 05, 2013, 01:32 pm »
Hey fellow amigos. Your friendly neighbourhood backyard Gnome is here to review Spectrum of Light by Tbremise, a forum soldier who has had back to back featured games. Knowing his other games Cloud Rider and Snowfall, this is set to be pretty difficult and look good too. He isn’t called the artist for no reason. I’ve known Tbrem for his graphics and his concepts mainly. Time to talk about the game. Spectrum eh, no not the song you doofus, the game. Let’s begin.

Well, Tbrem has been at the peak of views lately and I wouldn't be surprised if he made it on Celebrity Big Brother or a Sploder Equivalent. I know Tbremise as a very artistic creator and he has very interesting and well made graphics. The playfield was colourless. That’s strange; I was expecting some rainbow coloured-eye-popping-dazzling game; not a depressing-sleepy-land full of darkness. If it was dark the whole way through, it really shouldn’t have been called Spectrum of Light, luckily it picked up on the colours.
But even though there was a small amount of colour, I was impressed. For some reason I just had a feeling that it wasn't going to blend in with other PPG's. Its concept was something I've been waiting to come to life for a long time. The graphics made the game feel fantastic. The player known as Roy G looked amazing, although I thought he may well have been related to Gandalf. It was very relevant, but it wasn’t quite as old as mrdragon sadly, but I’m not that upset, because that would take a massive grid to make so many wrinkles.

I knew from the ratings that it was going to be unique and a tough game. And I was right, all the way from the start of the game to the final couple of colours to retrieve. It practically winded me or some sort of gaming equivalent because I felt like going SWAH! It was totally different from what I expected. That is what I love about this game; there are just not too many people out there who have that unique style. But Spectrum of Light has got to be the first of a new generation of ppg masterpieces.

Wait! Hold up! So we're painting the world? Aw… I see. At first I thought the concept would clash with "Paint It Black" by Cali. You have the power to sustain colours, but when you fall into a deep sleep, you wake up to find the world a dark, colourless place. A world without colour, I wonder what life would be like. There would be no sunshine or pretty flowers or… Spidapigs! Let’s not get off topic here. Don’t expect me to be demonstrating making graphics,  only a few could really show off on their graphics. Tbrem would make even them look like a 4 year old when it comes to graphics.
Puzzles bring back the colours of the so called, ‘rainbow.’ Knowing operation rainbow; I hope none of that snuck into this game. Uh oh! Hope Parry didn't hear that! Now I’m going to have to curl up under the stairs. Err, lets start err heading to the err flaws.

To be honest, the puzzles were somewhat disappointing. That doesn’t mean the game is terrible. Let’s just make this clear, every game has some flaws but this games flaws were very big flaws. There wasn’t anything special about the puzzles, unlike the rest of the game; it was something I had seen before. I felt it lost its shine due to that as the game’s ratings rested on the puzzles and it made its structure leaky.

Overall the gameplay was average. It was slightly on the laggy side. It didn’t really ruin the game, but It made it look like another platformer game. The flow of the game was nice, it’s difficulty progressed nicely. The feel of it was picture perfect. I can imagine how tbremise would have wanted this game, this couldn’t have been far off.

The concept is probably the biggest factor to a game. If you don’t get yourself a good concept, the results won’t turn out too good. Most games need to have a good concept to hit the big time, unless the game is insanely hard. As soon as you find a good, fresh concept then all you have to do is to let your imagination run wild, and you can guarantee success coming your way. The concept was impressive. It was unique and different. It had a great feel to it. But you need all of the variables to solve an equation. I really think that Tbremise held back a little bit on letting his imagination run wild. For one the puzzles didn't really blow you away. And every level looked the same, I almost felt like I was playing the same level over and over again. Except for the fact, that the puzzles were different in each level. Overall, I loved the concept but I think Tbremise held back on his imagination.

This was definitely feature worthy. I don't want to make you read forever on this so let’s just keep a titchy little paragraph here. It wasn’t insanely hard *frowns at Matt* but it had the fire I needed. You want some more candy. Tough, I don’t have anymore, that means we’re near the end of our review, so let’s sum it up.

Gameplay: 6 Dancing Gnomes (Good but was quite average)
Creativity: 9 Dancing Gnomes (Never seen it before)
Scenery: 8.5 Dancing Gnomes (EYE CANDY! YUM)
Puzzles/Traps: 5.5 Dancing Gnomes (Fell behind the pack of epicness)
Fun: 8 Dancing Gnomes (Not too hard, I could actually get somewhere)
The good:
You want some Eye candy? This game had lots of it.

The bad:
Puzzles get the HONK from me. That didn’t come out right did it?

The Magic:
I am Gandalf, bow down to me.

I just realised, how can you have a half dancing Gnome? Just remember kids, never take candy from strangers. Anyways, hope you enjoyed this review.
