Title: (Application) No, I forgot my flashlight! - A review on "Slender"
Post by: blackmustangs075 on November 28, 2012, 10:45 pm
What do you do when you find yourself trapped inside of a dark labyrinth? Is this an illusion? No. Maybe you're just blind. Or maybe, you're playing "Slender," by lumberjay. This game is basically a giant labyrinth. Whether you're blind or you have 20/20 vision, you probably both have the same chance of getting out of this dangerous and abusive game. That chance is: 0.01%. All I can say is, after playing this game, I can look back at it and definitely say that my mind has never been so dazed since that time at band camp when- You know what, that's personal. Forget I said anything about that. Moving on!

                                                                   Introduction

Well, the reason I am reviewing this game is merely due to my insane boredom. I decided to scroll through the featured games list, and this game just happened to catch my eye. I don't personally know the game creator, and I've never played any other games of his. I merely chose to review this game out of interest in the game cover.

I can easily say that this may be one of the most frustrating games I've ever played, besides Pacman. Oh, and Mrs. Pacman. That one's even worse. But enough jokes. (Okay, maybe a little more jokes) It's time to get to the good stuff... Oh, yeah.

                                                                 Tell us about it!

You start off in a dark maze. No light. Wishing you remembered to bring your flashlight with you. You're just surrounded by blocks, and barrels in the beginning. In order to proceed, you basically must have luck. Trying to escape this death trap can easily lead to a lot of explosions, followed by death, followed by rage-quits, followed by hate comments and then bans. But if you manage to survive that ridiculousness, you then get to the even more annoying part of the game. A huge maze with fake blocks and back walls. The thing is, you can't tell what blocks are real and what blocks are not real. The player must use his or her wits to escape this bewitching maze. This leads to a very mysterious and interesting environment.

The aspect of the maze was what overtook me about this game. This is not just an ordinary maze game. It really makes you explore, and get the feel of the game. You feel the dark maze taking you in. Defying you. Mocking you, saying "You cannot escape."

Another thing that sparked my interest in the game was the placing. With the fake/real blocks spread out viciously across the maze, it makes the player confused. Sometimes you may have to go back and forth across the maze, and when you finally exit the maze on one side, you'll have to go back in, and you may not remember the exact route. (MORE FRUSTRATION) D:

                                                            Is this review over yet??

I must say that overall, this game was good. The level designs were very intricate. But of course, with every good game, there are gaps. Although the maze was interesting, I felt that there weren't enough puzzles. The puzzles are only supported by one thread; the block puzzle. With only one thread attached to support this concept, the concept just falls apart. The lack of puzzles made the game less enjoyable, and I feel the game would have been more amusing if it had more politics of this concept included in the game. There was also a lack of enemies. There were few enemies at all, and not enough support in other categories to carry the weight. I would normally be complaining about the lack of decorations, but if you're blind, what does it matter?

                                                              Notes to Lumberjay

The game was very interesting and well thought-out, but previously stated, the game lacks puzzles, which detracts from the gameplay. I also felt that there could have been more health-packs. When the barrels explode at the beginning, it makes it difficult to do anything more in the game. Other than those minor issues, it was a very creative and fun game. Kudos to Lumberjay. (Round of Applause)

                                                                    Report Card

Puzzles/Traps - 2/5
Placement - 4/5
Challenge- 5/5
Decorations- 2/5
Gameplay- 3/5
Originality- 4/5

Overall- 20/30 (About 3/5)

Do I think this game is feature-worthy? Maybe. Doesn't really make a difference though, considering the fact that it's already featured anyways..

It was okay, but I'm not exactly sure if it's worthy to land you a Reviewer badge, and here's why:

Most of the review seemed like a walk-through, and it seemed kind of stale.
Give your opinion on the game, and since we're all about constructive criticism here at Sploder, offer some advice to the game creator on what they could do better next time.

Denied. It was wrote very well, but the starting paragraph of the main review was a walkthrough, which isn't really the best. You also need to say how the creator could of improved the game or certain aspects.

You may reapply on the 22nd
