General / Russian Doll

One of the (new) best shows currently on Netflix. It's a binge-worthy ride, and it's detail rich. The characters are complex and memorable. The dialogue occasionally falls flat, but overall, I'm excited about watching this again.

It gives me some Eternal Sunshine vibes.

General / Affirmations
« on: February 15, 2019, 08:01 pm »
Some context: I've experienced seasonal depression a bit this year, but compared to past years it's not as bad. It does still take a toll on my energy levels which correlates with the amount of art I create, the amount of work I complete, etc.

With that being said, I have been a bit bummed lately regarding the job search. More specifically, the defining lack of response (aside from a couple of declined letters and automated emails). I know I'll find the right job. I've been incredibly proactive, but I also have to be patient (and I'm not a patient person).

I started listening to some of those affirmation videos on YouTube in the morning when I get ready. If you haven't listened to them before, affirmations typically are a repetitious series of positive "I am" statements. Some of them are silly ("I am indestructible") and some of the success-oriented ones fall victim to capitalism ("there is no limit to the amount of money I can make").

But some of these are actually encouraging - "the past is the past. I don't dwell on my mistakes, but I don't forget them because mistakes are lessons and I keep these lessons in my heart and carry them on my journey to being a better person."

"I am loved and deserve love; I am the perfect partner for my perfect partner. I respect those around me and react with love."

This is the perfect zombie movie, because half of the dialogue is screaming.

Also, for the "realism" factor, the cameraman has a severe case of Parkinson's.
It makes it look like a zombie apocalypse could really happen! Like a documentary!
I've never seen that done before in a movie!

Cloverfield, Saving Private Ryan, Man of Steel, Quarantine, Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3...

Chances are, it won't be done in time. I'm focusing a lot of my attention on Write Away and the ACT.

But I want you to know that I've made a lot of progress, and I plan on releasing it one of these days. Sorry for all of the delays.  :'(

RPFG's, Groups, Contests and Forum Games / Write Away

Write Away

No good writer, despite how effortless they make their craft seem, is born that way.  Every good writer encounters trial and error.  Reaching the glorified state of being a “good” writer might take months or years.
It’s incredibly hard to translate the thoughts on your mind to a blank piece of paper.  Sometimes, you know what you need to say, but you might not know how to say it.

Writer or not, I sincerely hope that every contestant has a phenomenal time writing their own masterpieces.
I have a few goals for this contest.  I hope…
•   Every contestant improves upon their usage of the English language.  Good grammar and good writing typically goes hand in hand.
•   This contest breeds intellectual thought and discussions.
•   This inspires participants to constantly improve their writing.  No one is perfect, and we all could strive to reach a higher standard.
o   If you have more ideas bouncing around your brain, don’t fret.  There’s a good chance that future contests will be held.
Best of luck on your entry!  Before you enter or start writing, make sure you read the guidelines (listed below).

Your challenge is to write a piece of fiction.  It should be based on one of the themes listed below:

          (A) Friendship
          (B) Revenge
          (C) Addiction
          (D) Hope

Your fiction can be loosely based on these themes.  It does not take away from your score.  It’s ultimately up to you, the writer.
Your fiction should have a minimum of 1000 words.
I will be “grading” each work on a rubric.  The rubric is as follows.
•   Grammar and Mechanics: Does the work “flow”?  Or is it rough and choppy?  Does the writer make little to no grammatical errors?  Does the writer avoid being overly-wordy?
•   Characters and Plot: Is the plot memorable?  Can the reader empathize with the characters?
•   Imagery and Style: Is the imagery indelible (not easy to forget)?  Does it help the reader to envision the location, situations, and/or characters?
A more in-depth rubric with point values will be posted closer to the deadline.  This rubric is subject to change.
Each contestant will have until September 15th to submit their entries.

As a moderator, I am using my very best discretion in this contest.  I know inappropriate language occurs in the real world, and some writers utilize such for realism as well as perfecting slang in dialogue.  I am fine with such language.  Just don’t try to make it every other word, as that can detract from the plot and the reader’s attention, rendering it distracting and annoying to read.
With that being said, I am not allowing excessive drug use (glorified in a positive manner) or sexually explicit content.
Plagiarism (the act of stealing someone's words and promoting them as your own) is not tolerated.
If your story contains any of these traits, your entry will be rejected and you may be banned from entering future Write Away contests.

David’s Weekly Tip_____________________________________________________________________
June 17th
One of the guidelines on the rubric asks for “indelible” imagery.  What does that exactly mean, anyway?  Imagery is a description of your characters or the environment that they are residing in.
There is forgettable imagery and indelible imagery.  Indelible imagery is hard to forget, making your characters and environments all the more memorable.
An example of forgettable imagery:

He was tall and ugly with black eyes.

Those are some pretty common adjectives (describers) used often in daily life.  Let’s see if we can expand upon that description a little bit with a metaphor or two.

He looked like a tall glass of water.  A stiff breeze might have blown him away.  He had a remorseless laser-gaze that he often used.  His eyes were empty, as if they were made out of coal.

Because the reader doesn’t actually know the man that I’m describing, I used coal as a way to describe his eyes.  Coal is black and inanimate, which describes more of the man.  Most readers have undoubtedly seen coal in their life at one point or another, and they can picture what this character looks like.  Hopefully this helps! –J.L

The Bunker / Write Away [Vote for Next Contest]
« on: June 10, 2013, 02:49 pm »
I'm working on a contest that I started a while ago.
It fizzled out due to my inactivity, but I'm not going to let that happen this time.

It's a contest that lets members flex their creative muscles.  Each contestant will write a short story based on a certain theme. Each story will be graded on a rubric that fosters constructive criticism and thoughtful feedback.

My goal is to help members improve their grammar and more importantly, promote intelligent discussions.

The Bunker / An Online Publication [Request]
« on: June 10, 2013, 02:44 pm »
I would like to design a Sploder publication.

It would be biannual and it would feature a list of the top games, a few reviews, a spotlight on the best contests, polls, among other things.

It would only require one thread, and it could be fused for a while.

Basic Training / Basic Training FAQ
« on: March 02, 2013, 04:29 pm »
Welcome to the Sploder Community forum!
We appreciate your membership, and we want to ensure that you have fun in a safe environment that fosters creativity.

With that being said, this thread will help you navigate the site. Our forum experts are happy to lend a hand if you have any questions or concerns.

I have compiled a list of the frequently asked questions that members usually ask during their first times on the forum. Please refer to this list before you ask a question. Avoid redundancy.

What's the point of a forum?
A forum is for fun group discussions that everyone can partake in.

Is the forum safe?
Absolutely. The forum staff is keeping the forum on watch for any security threats or offensive posts. With that in mind, we cannot stop every inappropriate post from ever being made. There is a chance that you might encounter crude posts that we have not cleaned up yet. Check with your parents and make sure you have their permission to use the forums before you delve any further.

What are the ranks?
Prisoner of War

How can I rank up?
Be respectful of other members. Have a good sense of humor. Don't take yourself too seriously.

How do I make a reply?
At the top and bottom of every discussion, there is an orange "reply" button. Click it.

How do I make a discussion?
Enter a category and at the top of the list, there is an orange "start a new topic" button.

How do you get a custom title?
At this time, there is no way for Privates to have custom titles. Look for a change in this policy very soon.

Why are my posts being changed to splode?
That's the forum censor. It catches most profanity and helps Sploder to be a more hospitable place. Don't bypass the censor, it's there for a reason.

What can I not post?
Anything that violates Sploder's Terms of Service . A good rule of thumb: if you have to wonder whether your post might be in bad taste or or not, it probably is.

Here are some additional resources for you to explore at your leisure.

The Bunker / [Idea] Batches
« on: March 02, 2013, 09:33 am »
I don't like having cluttered categories.

With that being said, what if we promoted users in "batches"?

There might be three members in a batch, it really depends on the rate of promotion.

This way, one thread could be made to congratulate them all. Eh?

The Bunker / New Protocol (?)
« on: February 14, 2013, 10:58 pm »
In the near future, should we have a new promotion protocol? I would like to see this:

  • Remove voting thread
  • Promote user (if he/she has passed)

Not much has changed, but note the extra step at the beginning. The deletion of the voting thread.

Since there is discussion about the potential soldier in that thread, I think it would be in the best interest for that to remain unknown to the new Soldier.

Just to protect your votes and how anonymous they are, if you're catching this mad flow I'd be spitting, dawg.

Simple Aye/Nay vote.
If voted in, Lts+ will delete the thread before the potential soldier is promoted.

The Bunker / TODO
« on: February 14, 2013, 08:11 pm »
Moderator reports are appreciated. They can serve as an expedient for eliminating forum posts that are regarded as spam or inappropriate.

However, this forum isn't one dimensional, and we know that moderator reports won't assuage every problem.

With that being said, you may use this thread to:
  • Request the promotion of a Soldier (who has passed voting)
  • Request the implementation of a forum function (that has passed voting)
  • Address a popular concern
This list is brief and only scratches the surface of the potential use for this thread. You may expound upon it at your own discretion.

Please no OT comments, though I know that won't be a problem for you all.  :)

As a brief note, this thread is kind of an experiment, part of the LL's Momentum plan to make the forum a safer, more exciting place. Lots of exciting changes coming your way, people!
