I don't know why they keep going down. I've upgraded all the software on the server. Must be something to do with the database version.

Evidently there's a power outage at the datacenter so that's why MS is down. No ETA on when it's coming up again.

Hi all!

I've gotten some reports of things on Sploder no longer working. I'm trying my best to deal with them but I have limited time and energy these days. The latest with the Retro Arcade games appears to be a Flash bug. Reverting to the previous version of the game "fixed" it although that re-introduces some bugs whose exact details I don't recall.

I also removed the captcha from warned commenters.

Finally, I know about boost auctions and I think Sploderheads is still broken, but I don't know why. It would take a lot of digging and re-acquainting myself with the code.

Who knows how much longer we have, but I'll try my best to keep her spaceworthy ;)

Thanks all!

General / POLL: Platformer Speed Improvement Release
« on: June 11, 2013, 12:24 pm »
I'd like to release the update for the platformer that will improve speed and stability for larger levels. You can test it now by going to any public platformer game page and adding ?v=11 to the URL.

General / New Plat Creator Emergency Update
« on: June 09, 2013, 03:07 am »
I've found and fixed a critical bug that was reported that would cause graphics to be corrupted and blocks to disappear. I've pushed an update to the live site. You may need to clear your browser cache to see this update.

You'll know you have the update when you can add up to 12 levels. ;)

General / UPDATE: Platformer Speed Improvement! TRY IT NOW!
« on: June 07, 2013, 04:03 pm »
I'm working on an update to the platformer that will improve speed and stability for larger levels. You can ttest it now by going to any public platformer game page and adding ?v=11 to the URL.

Please test one of your larger games and let me know if there's a speed improvement.

If you know of an extremely laggy game and you see a dramatic improvement (or not) please post a link to it in this thread.

[updated] Also, if you have any games where sword-climbing or acrobatics are needed to solve the level, please test to make sure it behaves correctly. The timings in the game have been locked down for stability across a range of computer speeds.

Today is a great day for Sploder everybody! We've finally launched our new creator with custom graphics support, AND an updated graphics editor with patterns for the platformer and larger graphics!

And now, it's time for me to DANCE!

I've just pushed a final update. So, you may want to clear your browser caches one last time. Skelly got some sounds and lasers no longer stick on the edge of the game.

Today I'd like you to test at least one of your old games in the NEW player. It's super-easy to test. Simply do the following:

1. Go to your public profile.
2. Click on a platformer game. (Make sure it's not a pre-2009 game)
3. Add ?v=10 to the URL and load the page.

The reason I want you to play old games is that I want to make sure there are no regressions in the player. I'd hate for existing games to break.

This should take 5 minutes of your time and would help immensely!

General / VOTE: Platformer BETA Launch

I want as many people as possible to bang on the new creator and try out new and old features. If you are working on a game I strongly encourage you to try the new beta.

I am not going to launch this creator fully until I get a critical mass of people who say it is ready for launch. So, if you want this to be launched for EGD, you should help test it out.

Things that need testing.

1. LOAD AND TEST OLD GAMES BUT DO NOT SAVE THEM. ALL OLD GAMES (except the very very old ones from before 2009) will be CONVERTED to the new creator.

2. TEST ALL CHARACTERS with and without graphics. ALL of their artwork has been extensively modified to support graphics. In some rare cases this may also affect their physics behaviors. Please test to make sure they work the same as in the old creator. THIS INCLUDES THE PLAYER.

3. Test the HECK out of applying graphics. Make sure it works and that it is easy to work with and to understand.

4. Test the new graphics editor beta. Make sure it works well with patterns, the new creator and the larger size, too.

You may say to yourself, "Boy that lazy Geoff that's his job!" And partly you are correct. But, there are nearly infinite variations in the ways we use these tools to create games. I can't possibly test all use-cases and game level permutations.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated. And remember, if no one tests it, it will never get launched. I am depending on YOU to test it and let me know if you are confident that it is ready, because YOUR GAMES will be affected.

Thank you!!!! :)

General / Important update to new beta graphics editor.
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:30 pm »

For those of you creating characters in the new graphics editor, there's an important update.

From now on, the pattern you choose will be saved along with the graphic. And, if you want the graphic to export properly, you will need to have that particular pattern selected.

It's important to note that, due to this change, new graphics made in the new editor will not open in the old editor. (old ones will open in the new one though)

The reason for this minor inconvenience is that I realized that all graphics are cropped when they are published from the editor. The problem with this is that the cropping was causing graphics applied to characters, cars and mechs were no longer fitting properly if the cropping was large (like if you only draw the head).

So... just take a mental note of this. It should be a no-brainer after we make the full transition because once you choose a pattern it is saved along with the graphic.

For those of you currently having fitting problems, you will need to reload your character graphics, choose a pattern, then republish.

Please be sure to clear your browser cache to get the latest version of the editor. If the copyright on the opening dialogue still says 2011, you are using an outdated beta. It should say 2013.

General / Platformer with Graphics RAW BETA
« on: May 29, 2013, 10:04 pm »
Really RAW, barely tested BETA of the new platformer creator is here:

You MUST use the link above. You can save and test, but:

1. DO NOT PUBLISH. Games will not show graphics on public pages.
2. DO NOT SAVE OLD GAMES. They will be upgraded to the new format and you may lose some data.

Announcements / Graphics Creator NEW BETA!!
« on: May 26, 2013, 08:17 pm »

You MUST go to the link above to see the new graphics creator. You should see a message indicating you are using the new beta.

What's New:

1. Larger, 60x60 graphic size. No animation is supported in this size.
2. Patterns for the up-and-coming platformer update (with graphics)
3. Fix to copy and paste. You can now copy an area, move the window and paste it anywhere.
4. Speed improvements in undo/redo.

Remember, this is a beta release, so there may be bugs, and your graphic may even get corrupted. You've been warned. :P

Please post any bugs you see here.

General / Arcade Creator BUG FIX RELEASE
« on: May 22, 2013, 07:23 pm »
Just pushed a fix for the arcade creator. Here's what's fixed:

1. Fixed collectables (+1000 pts each) not being counted on the Top Scores leaderboard.
2. Boss freezing and not exploding in some cases.
3. Jumping bug *may* be fixed.
4. Ability coins in testing were not affecting the player. Fixed.

Let me know if you see any regressions or any of these were not fixed. Be sure to clear your browser cache and retest before reporting a bug.

General / HELP! Arcade Creator Bugs?
« on: May 22, 2013, 02:57 pm »
Please! I need your help! I have two bugs that I am unable to reproduce, and I need your help to reproduce them.

1. Jumping bug: Some people have said they can jump many times in a row, even more than double-jump... sometimes up to 6 times in a row. I cannot reproduce this.

2. Boss bug: Some people have said if you add a cave boss, then an older boss, the older boss cannot be destroyed even after all items on it are destroyed.

Can any of you reproduce these bugs in a simple game? If you can, then please:

1. Publish the simple game and share it here.
2. Try clearing your browser cache by going to Google or another site, clearing your cache, coming back and playing again.
3. Let me know if you can still reproduce the bug or it goes away.

Please let me know in this thread if you are willing to help out. Thank you for your help!

General / Something I'm working on
« on: May 21, 2013, 07:56 pm »
So I had an idea of a basic 3d game. What do you all think of this?

I was thinking of adding the ability to use graphics from the graphics editor, and also adding the game logic from the arcade creator to be able to add items, text, link logic, doors, etc.

General / Arcade Creator BUG FIX RELEASE
« on: May 09, 2013, 04:34 pm »

Turns out a lot of little bugs were in this release, sorry. I just pushed an update that should fix:

1. Sliding not working on baddies.
2. Weird particles appearing when going from Forest to Cave World.
3. Boss death not turning off barrier.
4. Squirts droplets were way too damaging.

Of course, let me know if any other problems crop up. New releases are expected to be a little buggy due to the infinite number of possibilities to test.

General / Cave World Launched!
« on: May 08, 2013, 03:25 pm »
Cave World is officially launched! You should be able to publish and play your games now.

Let me know if you run into any trouble.

P.S. there was a hiccup when I pushed the new player live. If you have trouble playing Arcade games (the game won't load) then clear your browser cache.

General / Cave World Soft Launch
« on: May 06, 2013, 11:12 pm »
Hi all!

I'm soft-launching the Cave World before full launch so you can test existing games.

Load your old games and test them. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES REPUBLISH ANY OLD GAMES OR NEW GAMES YET. If you do, the game will not run in the player on your public game page.

Please do me and yourself a favor and test your old games, noting any difference in behavior. If there are any, I will attempt to fix them so that we don't break existing games.

Also, please test out the new Cave World. You can save games and test them in the creator as much as you want. Just don't publish them!

Go ahead and put feedback in this thread. I'll make an official thread once we fully launch.

I've recently been made aware of a thread whereby members were attempting to share inappropriate photographs of a person who is underage. Let me make this CRYSTAL clear.

Not only is this activity against our Terms of Service, it is AGAINST THE LAW. If you engage in such activity, and you are caught, you could get in a LOT of trouble. If you are over 18, it could RUIN YOUR LIFE.

Besides the fact that this is both against our Terms of Service, and against the law, it is immoral, reprehensible behavior. If you engage in this kind of activity, you will end up regretting it for the rest of your life.
