Title: PLAT-BETA TESTING WEEK
Post by: geoff on May 30, 2013, 06:58 pm
All,

I want as many people as possible to bang on the new creator and try out new and old features. If you are working on a game I strongly encourage you to try the new beta.

http://www.sploder.com/free-platformer-game-maker.php?beta=true

I am not going to launch this creator fully until I get a critical mass of people who say it is ready for launch. So, if you want this to be launched for EGD, you should help test it out.

Things that need testing.

1. LOAD AND TEST OLD GAMES BUT DO NOT SAVE THEM. ALL OLD GAMES (except the very very old ones from before 2009) will be CONVERTED to the new creator.

2. TEST ALL CHARACTERS with and without graphics. ALL of their artwork has been extensively modified to support graphics. In some rare cases this may also affect their physics behaviors. Please test to make sure they work the same as in the old creator. THIS INCLUDES THE PLAYER.

3. Test the HECK out of applying graphics. Make sure it works and that it is easy to work with and to understand.

4. Test the new graphics editor beta (http://www.sploder.com/free-graphics-editor.php?beta=true). Make sure it works well with patterns, the new creator and the larger size, too.

You may say to yourself, "Boy that lazy Geoff that's his job!" And partly you are correct. But, there are nearly infinite variations in the ways we use these tools to create games. I can't possibly test all use-cases and game level permutations.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated. And remember, if no one tests it, it will never get launched. I am depending on YOU to test it and let me know if you are confident that it is ready, because YOUR GAMES will be affected.

Thank you!!!!  :)

I tried all; works quite well. I didn't find any bugs. Applying graphics is easy enough, and I didn't see anything flying or acting unusual with the enemies.

I think it's ready for launch.

I am actually encountering a minor problem. Whenever I open up the tile selector box, I can't choose a tile texture. It may just be my computer, but I was encountering no such thing until after the updates. It isn't a huge deal as I've dealt with it back in 2010 (when the box wasn't there), but if it's in your grasp of time, it'll be an honor to look into.

I don't like graphics in the platformer tbh It's becoming a lot similar to the PPG. I like it with just the basic graphics.

Oh come on, cursing right in front of geoff?

That can't be safe.

I speculate a high chance that graphical modifications may not be the only things for foes.  Perhaps geoff will have us be able to modify the foe properties soon, like being able to give more health to an enemies, change damage amount or change their movement/attack speed.

One day.

The ally is a nice addition, I find it annoying how non-probe enemies pretend like it doesn't exist.  Especially ranged foes who can hurt it.  Is this intentional?

When I test the game with the platformer creator in this beta form, the player moves faster than it did before. And when i try to jump the player, the jumping response is late. Also when I test the game, the player kind of blurs.

With heavy foes like firetrolls, georges and rockies, the graphic hands get very elongated.

Don't save?

Uh oh.

Well, anyway, I had a puzzle in one of my games where I bat touched a green and orange perma switch.  Before the update, they turned off and on automatically.  Now, the green doesn't seem to turn on, and the orange doesn't turn off.

Here's a pic.

Very odd! Anyone else experience this?

It may be because you are testing in the creator as opposed to playing on a public page. The game-play is a little choppier in the creator because it has the creator loaded behind it.

I tried putting a graphic on the wizard, and it completely transformed him into the graphic, which moved and worked decent. It changed his message to "0" for some reason. There is some issues with sizing on the wizard and the platformer character. Moving graphics work on the wizard, but not the wall or the character.

EDIT: All messages have become "0" for some reason.

I encountered this as well, but I thought it was intentional. I was trying to create a background rain effect with Ravi's animated rain graphic, but the rain wasn't moving.

EDIT: All messages have become "0" for some reason.

Moving graphics do not work on characters. It will work on wizards and non-stone walls, like lamwalls. Stone walls (ones that look like stone that have the number choice for the texture) never ever animate because they are designed to be frozen to take up less CPU.

Please describe in detail or take a screenshot of the "sizing issue" with the wizard.

Was the game where the message became '0' originally from the old creator, or is this a game that you created with the new creator from scratch? It's possible the message became '0' due to a bug I recently fixed. Try editing that message and saving the game again, then reload it and see if it becomes '0' again. Also, test the game and see if the message appears when you play. It should fix itself after you re-enter the text.

Yes. Graphics are not supported on the player body due to the large number of alternate graphics for the player, like armor, alternate weapons, and special moves. It just wouldn't look right.

Put it on a lamwall or background brick (not stone tile)

This is an unfortunate drawback to using custom graphics for the player. Recommend not using roll ability if you've customized the player. I can try getting it to work but it will look funny.

Graphics will always stretch to fit the character. You can always draw your elements taller in the first place to get less distortion.

It doesn't appear or doesn't animate? Animations do not appear on stone tiles. Stone tiles are designed to take less CPU to draw so no animation is supported.

Do you think that grounded allies would ever be possible in the future?

Thanks for the feedback. Grounded allies probably aren't possible due to the amount of AI necessary to get a character to follow the player over obstacles and to jump and land in the right places.

You can't customize the player's body because of all of the graphic states and armor levels.

Just pushed another update that fixes:

1. Tile Explorer buttons broke due to a UI kit regression.
2. Door graphics were re-appearing under textures.
3. Life display was not restoring to full brightness when health was added.

Some of you still have bugs reported without fully describing/demonstrating them. I need to be able to replicate the bugs if you want them fixed. :)

Couldn't you just give the grounded ally a vision range where it only follows you if you are within a certain range of it? It could be very similiar to the of an enemy and would definetly make the game a lot more fun. Just an idea of course.

Could you also make an extra large background block? I and some others, have made "room" graphics which are supposed to encompass larger areas.

A few more questions

1) Do large background blocks decrease lag in comparison to the small background pieces?

2) Could you possibly add applicable sound effects so we can pick which sound effects we want our enemies to display?

3) Does adding graphics slow down the game?

Very odd! Anyone else experience this?

It may be because you are testing in the creator as opposed to playing on a public page. The game-play is a little choppier in the creator because it has the creator loaded behind it.

thank you Geoff. I will try it with only one tab this time.  :)

Is that supposed to happen, when having one block delete just the graphic, but then one or more can't put graphics when both selected, and deletes the objects as a whole when they are both selected. Don't understand? watch the video....

Well it would be a convenience if you had one or more blocks/tiles/etc. and you wanted to change them all to the same thing i.e. rain or weathering with backtiles, it would save time. Just a thought, you dont really have to do it though! :)

2) Not this release, sorry.

3) Animated graphics might. We'll have to see.

In older games, something's messing the graphics up.  The enemies do this for instance:

(http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu328/raquzzic/Screenshot2013-06-01at82011AM.png) (http://s660.photobucket.com/user/raquzzic/media/Screenshot2013-06-01at82011AM.png.html)

The sprite isn't applied to them and they stare at the player instead.

Anything not graphics related works well however; hovercraft works great.

best thing to do is to try to match the proportions of the original hand. Remember, you don't have to draw within the blobby shape on the pattern, as long as you stay within the edges you are fine.

Old game.

Please do the following:

1. Go to google or a blank page and clear your browser cache.
2. Go to the new beta creator (http://www.sploder.com/free-platformer-game-maker.php?beta=true) and load the old game.
3. Click on a text message to see if it says "0".
4. Test it (it should reload the new game engine) and play it... does it say "0"?

Let me know if it still happens. Honestly I'll be flummoxed if it does, because I totally fixed that bug twice.

Thanks but that's not an old game.

FYI: There was a bug that was in the new beta creator that was causing texts and burst-tile links to be erased. So, at that time if you were making a game in the beta and loading and saving it, you'd lose the text, etc.

So, your game unfortunately got corrupted. You can still use the game, you'll just need to retype all the texts. Sorry about that!

For good measure, I'd recommend typing only 1 text, saving and reloading. The text should still be there. If it is, then the bug is fixed.

Geoff I have a question. so does the new 60 x 60 platformer graphics creator allow people to create graphics that match the platformer creators resolution or in other words "quality"?

The reason I am asking is because the ppg grahics creator is like "Snes" for example.

The Platformer creator is like  "Nintendo ds" for example.
Title: Re: PLAT-BETA TESTING WEEK
Post by: geoff on June 02, 2013, 01:16 am
Um... Kinda?  It doesn't quite match the resolution for the characters. But, yes, each tile in the platformer happens to be 60x60.

BUG

- I copied - pasted a level in a old game.
- I oppened it in the old platform creator.
- Now, everything that I wrote has desappeared and turned into a "0"...

Oh, could you make an option that makes the allies follow you?

I said from the beginning, don't cross the streams. Opening a game in the old creator after saving it in the new creator will break it...
Title: Re: PLAT-BETA TESTING WEEK

How new does the game need to be for graphics to work and not break inscriptions?
Title: Re: PLAT-BETA TESTING WEEK
Post by: geoff on June 02, 2013, 02:48 am
How new does the game need to be for graphics to work and not break inscriptions?

Not sure if I've been clear.

Old = Non-beta (currently live, non-graphics) creator that everyone uses now.
New = Beta version of the creator at the beta URL.

--

ALL OLD GAMES WILL WORK... as long as you don't load them in the new creator and save them, then open them in the old creator. Once you save them in the NEW creator, they are converted to the new data format. Therefore, if you then open them in the old creator, some data will not appear.

ALL NEW GAMES WILL WORK. But, they are in the NEW data format. If you open them in the old creator, some data will not appear.

--

Finally, some early NEW games were corrupted by a bug (which is now fixed) that caused text and links to burst tiles and closers to be lost. That is probably the source of most confusion. Those games can be fixed by simply re-entering the text and re-establishing the links.

Hope this makes sense. Sorry for the inconvenience, but that's all part of the beta process.

The ally graphic box is a bit wonky.

Here's a enemy probe sprite compared to its ally equivalent:

(http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/uu328/raquzzic/Screenshot2013-06-01at115658PM.png) (http://s660.photobucket.com/user/raquzzic/media/Screenshot2013-06-01at115658PM.png.html)

The oval shaped probe is the ally, the circular one is the normal wants to kill you and all your friends and family with lasers probe.

Game: Broken Darkness
Type: New

It seems that if there is a graphic block in the first level, the next will have graphics.
EDIT: Now NO graphics are working at all. Although, I've noticed the weapons become 8-bit-ized like you intended, but the texture for the monster stays the same. And the blocks-disappearing thing is happening again.

What do you mean by "Now NO graphics are working at all"? Which object had a graphic applied to it? What level?

Which blocks disappeared? What level? Were you testing the game or did they disappear in the creator? Can you still collide with them?

I opened and tested your game and did not notice any bugs, although I did not see any graphics applied. Perhaps that's what you meant by "no graphics working" But, tell me what was expected to happen and what actually happened.

Finally, make sure you've cleared your browser cache and that you are ALWAYS using the beta link and NOT the old creator.
1. I mean the next level will have graphics if the first one does. I tested, and this is not true.
2. By no graphics working at all, I mean the tile stays the same when a graphic is added, the enemy, the player, whatever else. It stays the original texture. Both levels so far have this problem. The graphics bar itself works.
3. All blocks I applied graphics to disappeared. They disappeared in testing. You can collide with them and they are visible in the creator.
4. I loaded and reloaded all objects with graphics twice, and the third time I just left them with no graphics at all. I was hoping you could help.
5. I have the link favorited and use it every time. Cleared my cache like five times already, and it didn't work. And if I had used the old creator, the graphics bar wouldn't have been there.

Hmm. can you save the game in a state where the error is happening? That way I can log in and test. Reason being is that I tried applying graphics to your game, "Broken Darkness" and had no problems.

Perhaps if you added one graphic at a time and tested, we could narrow down at which point the error happens.

Once you encounter the error, save the game and I'll look at it.

Thanks for helping me track down this obviously pesky bug.

Here's a compilation of all enemy types to show proportions:

From left to right:

-Probe
-Firetroll
-Skelly
-Mongol
-Kikuchyo
-Archie

From left to right:
-Native
-BigMutant
-Mutant [strong]
-Mutant [weak]
-EnemyMech

From left to right:
-BigRobot
-Robot
-Rocky
-Minion

I hope this helps gauge the proportions of foes, at least show the ones that may need some modifying to be more "graphic friendly".

I just realized you added the copy level option thank you so much. That would've been so much more useful in the past. I know this isn't a ask for updates thread but it'd be really nice to have armor that was immune to lava.

Speaking of updates, will the Skellys have their own sounds? The mongols reused sounds seem a bit out of place.

Feel free to clear your caches to check the latest update. I'd like everyone who is currently using the beta to please clear their cache and test one last time. I'd like to launch this by Wednesday. But, I won't do it unless I get a vote of confidence from the group.

I'll check for bugs in the creator.

Something i found. Not a bug, but probably coding not touched.
If you use the hovership and fire at the invisible wall (game border), then exit the hovership and touch the bullets, you get damage from them.

The first dog is the player, the second is the dog dog and the third is the dog magician NPC. Looks like a bit strange

Or should we do the NPCS with the normal graphics mode?

Putting graphics on ramp tiles and stair tiles do not get cut off with the shape of the ramp or stair.

Normal graphics. Geoff recropped the graphics to a point, and because of that, the arms/legs can't  be seen. Try to stay inside the center when making an NPC graphic, though!  ;)

Then make a triangular graphic. :blank:

I made a graphic in the pattern of the mech and it doesn't cover the mech right!

Yeah, I knew this would cause confusion. Since wizards and generals don't move, they aren't sliced-up like other characters. Just draw them exactly as you would any other graphics. :)

Post your graphic here, and if possible take a screenshot of the mech.

So are these graphics made with the 60 x 60 platformer graphics creator? If yes, then the graphics look as if they were made with the ppg graphics creator. I thought that the 60 x 60 graphics creator would look like the platformers resolution.

Is this supposed to happen? Or is there going to be an update in the future?

I like everything like "Naming Levels", "Duplicating Levels", "Hovership", "Ally", "Skelly" etc.  :)

Once again, they're the same graphics maker!  :o

That's cause thugs don't have legs, they only have feet =p
Ugh! The sizing is such a problem! I made a Tyrein graphic with an open mouth and a fire emblem on its chest and the Snarley head completely covered the emblem. Same thing with the Mongol, only half the speed emblem showed.

Hint: you can adjust the positioning by adding black pixels under the head. make them 10% opaque and they'll look like a shadow.

Something that I think could get annoying would be if you made tiles and backwalls use the same graphic, so you couldn't tell them apart.

True! I'll leave that up to the designer. It could also lead to interesting puzzles.

I've created a new poll to tie up any final issues.
