Title: Religion.
Post by: konnichiha' on March 16, 2013, 07:28 pm
I brought up the topic of abortion, and of course it branched out into a religious argument. So, here's a thread for religion.

Disagreement is perfectly fine, but mutual respect is important. I'll lock this thread as soon as this is broken, if a mod doesn't do it first.

Hey man. Just sayin', I'm the one who started the whole "religious" thing on the Abortion thread. I didn't mean for anything to start, I was just posting my opinion, and why I had that opinion. Why isn't anyone arguing or anything on here yet? A huge thing on the Abortion thread about religion, nothing here. Shew, weird.

Singularity goes boom.
Then energy is formed, and it compresses to matter due to heat or somethin' I'm too lazy to pay attention.
Gravity and electromagnetic forces are formed, along with the nuclear ones.  Eventually, stars form.  One star that forms after a long time is our sun.  With our sun comes rocks, all of which compress, creating the inner planets.  Earth was in a cool place for water, which came from comets and stuff.  Earth also got special acids which eventually combined in such a way that life was formed.  Due to radiation or summat, life evolved, and eventually we were made.

Actually yes, there has been proven evidence of a "God Particle" which is scientifically named "Higgs Boson". Two protons in this particle had collided, which in turn emitted two jets of Hadrons and two electrons which was powerful enough to create an ever-growing wave of energy. Some of this energy (following Einstein's E=mc^2) which was moving at greater than the speed of light turned into matter. Along with this, this energy also turned into small single cell organisms, a lot of these organisms died  due to improper living conditions, however later organisms lived on a planet named Earth. These organisms adapted in this environment and began to evolve into much more complex animals.

I am Catholic, and I do believe in god, I celebrate Catholic holidays, and I even go to youth group every Thursday night, but sadly, I do not go to church services, but I do help out a lot with church and stuff. If you are Atheist or any other religion my religion frowns upon, I don't care, I will not judge you on your religion, I will judge you on your actions. My girlfriend doesn't even believe in god, but me and my friends still love her the way she is. In our friend group, she's atheist, another one is Christian, another one is Wiccan, one is Pegan, and I am not really sure what the other one is lol. But still, they are my friends no matter what, because I really can trust them, no matter what religion.

A religion is an orderly and absolute set of beliefs and moral values that determines the functionalities and routines of a society. One of the essential elements of any religion is a belief in a sort of divine and superior entity. Religion is rooted both through instinctive feeling and through philosophical reasoning.

Apparently, Allah (God) made our minds puny enough, we can't understand that not everything has to start. I can't understand, though, for I am human.

And the world is in Horrible state because God wants to make you know that the life is a stupid thing (Well, lets just say Paradise should be better)and death will come any time so get ready 4 Paradise. Death is really just the end of roller coaster ride. Do a good ride and you can stay in the rest of the park. Do a bad ride and you'll be kicked out of the park (hell, in a way). Death is just teh unexpected end, so we Muslims shouldn't be scared of death as much. (look beloe, and below that before opposing ^____^)

The Heaven isn't in space because God is not dumb to put it in a place we can find it.

ISLAM ISLAM ISLAM (well, I am stating opinion)

Umm... lmao. xD Science is just an excuse for not knowing things? That is exactly what religion is. We don't know how the universe was formed? God created it. Jesus was found missing 3 days after he was killed? He is god. How was life formed? God made a sculpture out of sand and gave it life.

Science is physical proof that something exists with non-disputable facts showing it is true. The exact opposite.

No you don't. There is no written proof of witnesses ever seeing this occuring.

1) You can't use the bible to prove the bible.
2) The bible is supposedly written by god himself, only he, and those characters were the witnesses. A character cannot stand as a witness.

No you don't. There is no written proof of witnesses ever seeing this occuring.

1) You can't use the bible to prove the bible.
2) The bible is supposedly written by god himself, only he, and those characters were the witnesses. A character cannot stand as a witness.

I might be mistaken, but the bible was written by the early apostles of christ, and our fore-fathers ( Abraham, Jacob).
It does not have to be a flame war. I believe in God, and I believe in science, it's fun to intertwine the two.

Ah, the old take-a-quote-out-of-context trick. In this sense, 'four corners of the earth' does not literally mean the four geographical corners of the world.

He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth.
Of course, given the sheer number of versions of the Bible, this isn't word-for-word for all Bibles, but all of the Bibles say this to some effect in Isaiah 11;12. Anyhow, it is clear here that the expression 'four quarters/corners of the earth' means 'from around the world'. The expression is being used metaphorically, not literally.

Almost anything can be made to sound stupid if you take it out of context. What is important is that you understand how the quote is being used.

Both are very important in living our lives, both can influence us positively if we allow it to, and both are necessities that we as humans cannot live without. Nope, you obviously aren't getting it. We KNOW that science doesn't explain everything yet. We don't assume that it does. (Unlike some people *cough**cough*). You see, what makes it so much more trustworthy, is that it can change to fit with what is needed. God, and all-mighty, omniscient and omnipotent being, cannot change what it says because what is first said is no matter what correct and has no fallacy. Which we can already see is false.

You shouldn't pick and choose parts of the bible to believe in. You either put your full faith in it, or you aren't part of that religion. You may fit another religion, but not that one.

And His resting place shall be glorious."
It shall come to pass in that day
That the LORD shall set His hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
From Assyria and Egypt,
From Pathros and Cush,
From Elam and Shinar,
From Hamath and the islands of the sea.
He will set up a banner for the nations,
And will assemble the outcasts of Israel,
And gather together the dispersed of Judah
From THE FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH.

That is the exact qoute, nowhere can you assume any differently, and you couldn't assume anything anyways as this is the word of GOD.
You can't just say, "That is to be taken metaphorically." In other words, what is written is not what is meant. Who are you to decide what ISN'T to be taken as other than the absolute WORD OF GOD. You are just twisting things around. xD

Simply because something is the word of God does not mean it must be taken literally, it simply means that it is something that God, an indisputable power in Christianity, has ordained to be fact. There are countless different metaphors that are used in the Bible, none of which should be terribly hard for a reasonable person to interpret. A very simple metaphor in Mark 7:21-22 is this:
"For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come--sexual immorality, theft, murder..."
Now, you could argue that the heart isn't capable of thought processes and that it's the brain which is responsible for our conscious, but I'm pretty sure that our ability to reasonsís capable to determine that 'heart' in this context is not referring to our biological heart. We do not need to extensively think the verse over to determine the metaphorical meaning of 'heart'.

I can't stand the game of religion. It's a system set up to control a mass of people. Some of it can be a useful teaching tool for a stable society, like don't kill, steal, cheat ect. But, it's a system that has been abused throughout history as a means for a chosen few to gain power. The portrayal of god is absurd too. He's supposed to be love and forgiveness but if you don't believe and praise me I'll make you burn forever in Hell. No thanks. That sounds like a sadistic person to me. The Christian image of god is a human made image. I think if their is a GOD, it's something we can't even comprehend. I do know a lot of good religious people though, and I respect that view and I would never hate them for their choice, as long as they can respect my choice.

Well, i'm not so sure about this.

I am talking from a viewpoint that God doesn't exist so follow me here.

Back when Isaiah was written, it was common knowledge that the world was in fact a flat square surface. That is why I believe that when "God" said the four corners of the Earth, he did in fact imply the world was flat.

Back when Mark was written around 60 AD, this was also a time when it was common knowledge was that the heart was where all forms of thoughts were formed.

So yes, I believe this is all literal.

Since everybody is hating on me and the fact that I believe in God, I'm the one who's gonna hide.

What makes any of you think that they ancient astronauts aren't among us right now? They could of either created us, like as if expirementing with their own kind, or they're us who've inhabited this planet, evolving over time to be able to adapt to this planet. Also the bible is not to be taken literally at all, if you really pay attention, its telling stories of the constellations lol.

Sorry if I am too hard on you, but how do you explain what happens after death. You mean, that's it? You lose consciousness forever?

Absolute bull, if there is such things as heaven and hell where do atheists go? Are they forced to go there against their will?

Our souls get reused. I think our souls are just a small piece of what people refer to as God as a whole. I'm not Atheist but I'm not religious either. I have my own beliefs that I have discovered over time. No one REALLY knows what happens so I don't  hate on people with a different opinion as long as they don't hate on me.

I've half strayed away from religion. Sometimes I catch myself saying "please God" and things of the like, but I've been so used to that I don't really know, I believe in evolution and stuff. Most, if not all religions are plain ridiculous tbh.

I doubt it.

The Quran says that Isa (Jesus) wasn't killed by crucifixion and isn't God incarnate or the Son of God.

Thoughts?

You're getting it all wrong. You are the one who CHOOSES to burn in hell. In the beginning, God gave us one of the greatest gifts of all time: Freedom of Choice. Yet we decided to use our gift for evil, and followed the path to sin. God doesn't want anyone to go to Hell yet ironically we choose to go to Hell. God isn't going to interfere with your decisions.

I did Christianity because it's what I'm most familiar with. But most religions seem to share similar qualities in my view. Now Buddhism...I think there's a lot of truth in some of those teachings. This whole subject is complicated to be honest because it's based on something that no one can exactly prove :) I'm very open to others tho. I like to hear what others think because sometimes you hear something worth hearing. What makes me hate is what I see on the news and things like FB where you have these extreem religious people condeming everyone else because they believe something different. That makes me mad and distorts my view, and I know this, that makes me like it even less.
