Japanese is a fundamentally different language from English in its grammar, vocabulary, and (in some cases) its basic structure.

In the case of Adobe Flash -> pretty much anything else, it's pretty similar. Flash has its own scripting language, and a radically different workflow from pretty much any other development environment. It's doable to make something roughly similar, but it's incredibly time consuming to do. Given that Geoff already has a career, family, and health problems to juggle; it's a tall order for him to make such a port.

Thats Easy. Just put the whole book into google translate!
And then you get a book with broken grammar and sometimes nonsensical/unintelligible passages.

Most of the creators have poor or fundamentally flawed gameplay.

At least 60% of featured games are kinda meh.

Just translate the stuff from flash to another player?
Imagine translating all of Harry Potter from English to Japanese.

It's kinda similar to that, but potentially more complicated.

As more developers take on the same project, the overall quality of the project decreases
Seems like a weird strawman version of Brook's Law, and the effect of that is really dependent on the structure your project and management use.

Back on topic...

Frankly I would focus on trying to sort out archival/downloads of existing games at the moment. The platformer is already open source, though I'm not sure how difficult it would be to get it loading up levels through an Adobe Air application based off of it. Not sure about the other creators.

Personally, I'd develop creators/players in Unity. It has really good multiplatform support, and it already covers low level features such as rendering and sound fairly effectively. This means that once a basic skeleton is made, development can be compartmentalized between developing assets for use in games (made easy via Unity's prefab system).

Yeah, that's another aim I'm working to do. I always replay my whole game before deciding if there are enough lives or not.

In Sonic Boom Rol, I now know I was kinda cheap with it... As I expected of players to explore in order to get extra lives.
Always play through your games in suboptimal ways when tuning difficulty. You can't expect players to know what to do, and sometimes they do stupid things.

When making Grandquest: Darkest Hour, for example, I played through each level from sword start and ignored optional content when trying to figure out where to route health and lives. I did something similar when making Unl3ashed: The Movie: The Game (minimal usage of special attacks like missiles and absolutely no usage of mortars) since I couldn't expect players to know or want to perform the optimal methods for ending each encounter.

General / Sunday TV/Movies discussion Thread.

Yo, It's Sunday. Discuss/share any cool shows, movies, or videos you've watched recently.

Also, vote for next Sunday's topic (and sorry about the delay). I've added some new random options for variety.

Real talk, 25% of this thread is probably going to be Steamed Hams memes.

i don't have a splodeing switch.
My life.

I don't even have a Wii U, my experience with Sm4sh pretty much comes from playing it on my friend's Wii Us.

Yep. He admitted to being an alt, got put in pow, got out of pow (for some reason...?), and now he's banned for good I guess.
He never outright admitted he was an alt. But he kept doing bizarre stuff, and his number spam pushed us over the edge.

I honestly completely forgot that existed. It hasn't been posted in for the last 6 or so months (and even then, it was super slow, like 8 posts before the one I linked and you're in 2016 territory) until today. Either way, locking it.

If it means anything, it isn't entirely hateful.

I'd be ok with it. Not sure how well my laptop that I'm using over the break will handle the algo creator games though.

I'm on break, that means I might actually get a chance to sink my teeth into something meaty and play through something...

Just kidding, I have an algorithms project to work on over the break X_X. However I may have been slowly cooking up an overhaul mod to a little known indy game called Good Robot for larks (pm me if you have the game and want to playtest the mod, it's about 70% complete).

Either way, post about games and stuff.

Game Discussion / Re: Length On My Sploder Plats
« on: March 08, 2018, 12:34 AM »
Depends on the type of game.

Harder games tend to work better when they are shorter because of how unforgiving death can be. You get more leeway when you have an easier game though. And games with more shallow mechanics are best kept short.

Generally though, you should aim for your games to be as short as possible without sacrificing anything key. That long hallway? Cut it. That combat encounter that's kinda like that last one? Cut it. That bit where the player backtracks without anything new? Add a faster path/teleporter. Anything that doesn't introduce the player to something new (be it a challenge, piece of scenery, or powerup, ect) can usually be removed to the game's benefit.

There are exceptions of course. Games may rely on repetition or blank space for pacing or theme may benefit. Likewise, games with intense moments of combat usually benefit from having some sort of breather between sections to add contrast. Just make sure that every part of your game has purpose, a long game doesn't feel long if it's really good.

General / Re: Saturday Inner Rage!
« on: March 08, 2018, 12:24 AM »
Ah, yeah. I've only played the first few maps of AA and already the first map has a Cybie. Didn't die there though - Map04 essentially made me quit until I finish other playthroughs. Those damn viles. Great music though!
AA is a bit brutal at points, the alien enemies (think imps with less health that deal more damage and can sorta teleport) that appear episode 2 onwards deal so much damage if you don't focus them down. Was playing it with High Noon Drifter and having a blast. Quicksaves are the best friend.

It also has some top tier music and visuals.

- 6/10 people survived that so far
- I had just gotten out of a tricky situation with 10% HP and got back to 100% before this trap
- I lost my nerves

= died to that guy. This really hurts and I'm still bitter about it.
I tried getting back into my playthrough of the Ancient Aliens WAD and I simply don't remember how I even got as far as I did.

Stuff is hard, yo.

Lots of the content on OC ReMIX is super underrated (and free).

Like, here's a re-imagining of one of the Sonic themes to be a near perfect emulation of Pendulum's music:

10. There is a lot of random garbage posted constantly
This is why I usually ignore it. It's nearly impossible to keep up on what's going on, let alone sort out the good from the chaff.

1. It is not a christian server
This is the real reason why I usually ignore it.

I'd beg to differ, most people active on the forums grew up with sploder as children. I would bet that we have like 15+ active members over the age of 18.
Story of my life right here.

General / Sunday Daily Thread Change Announcement
« on: February 25, 2018, 04:07 AM »
Since threads in the middle of the week don't seem to attract much if any activity, and the Sunday threads are not working out as planned. I am making some changes to the daily thread format.

New Schedule:
Monday- Music
Friday- Video Games
Saturday- Inner Rage
Sunday- Voted Topic

Basically, every Sunday the thread will be about whatever topic was voted on in last week's thread. The poll will not contain an option for the current topic (so no consecutive tech sundays, for example). If y'all have ideas for topics to include in future polls, pm me.

General / Re: Has game making on Sploder officially fallen off?
« on: February 24, 2018, 06:45 PM »
Honestly, there are many more alternatives to Sploder now-a-days and the mainsite is using old tech that hasn't really been updated.

I've been satisfying my game making itch by messing about with modding a few super obscure indie games (working on a overhaul mod for Good Robot atm) and putzing about in Unity3d.

Doubt it will be completed, it's a pretty big project.

Still holding out on Geoff making it possible to download games. Shouldn't be *that* tricky, and Adobe Air support should continue for a decent while longer (so games will remain playable).

Reminds me of some of the stuff you would see in old demoscene stuff. I like it.

Either way, copy/paste from other thread- I've been getting back into Planetside 2 with some friends recently. The grind is a bit annoying, but it's always cool seeing the sheer scale of the battles.
