How to imagine more challenges
« on: July 21, 2019, 09:38 pm »
So i'm working on a platformer game and I'm low on ideas for challenges (like platforming, monster encounters, puzzles). How do you guys come up with new obstacles to put in the players path?

I got this sequence that must be useful

Have a tall closed building. Have perm blocks sticking out on each sides like platforms. But at the corner of those blocks lie the perm switches. The player must carefully go on the perm blocks and avoid the switches, and if he makes a mistake of jumping too much and activating the switch, all teh blocks disappear and he will have to start over again. Cool right?

The only thing that does is make a game frustraing and tedious, its not even a challenge, its just very tedious and makes the player not want to go further.

Oh, well my game already has platforming challenges where instead of killing the player the player just has to do it again. I'm not a fan of death pits, so I use hotblocks instead of lava.

Yeah using things like that actually makes the game a lot better, but rocky's idea is very frustrating to play, and a parkour with hotblocks is a good touch and not tedious unless the parkour itself is.

-Try applying existing concepts in new ways
-Play glitch-showcasing games and try to find uses for them
-Exploit certain aspects of enemies (ninja stars can break sandblocks, big robots fly if you stand on their heads, etc)

What does that mean?
tedious means boring or monotonous. I think he means that challenge was more likely to bore or frustrate the player than excite them.
