VG Debate: Best Part of a Video Game?
« on: June 03, 2019, 11:44 pm »
When you play a video game, what are you looking for that makes it memborable and nostalgic? What do you like the most about them?

I personally always find storylines, music, and memorable characters as the most important in a video game.

What do you guys think is the best part of a video game that makes it memorable?

Sometimes it depends. While most would go for the naturally popular option of "storyline", I'll choose the characters instead.  I can't think of a single game I truly liked in which the characters weren't the main factor.

I like the level sequence in many games. In Ben 10 Protector of Earth, there was a set of 5 levels, with two based on exploration, one based on exploration + miniboss, one based on boss, and one based on a single wave fight. Every set of 5 levels followed this sequence and it was very innovative. I like to see this in all games.

Other than that, I care a lot about the fighting music.

For me, the character can take a back row seat as long as the storyline and overall "good" feeling is there.

The said "good" feeling is caused largely by the characters to be honest

I also find that I am drawn to games that are relatively simple in playing also.

Level design. Games are nothing if they can't teach and condition their mechanics through well thought out levels.

I agree with this. Tetris, for example, would be rubbish if it was not easily understood how the mechanics work.

However, I think that besides mechanics, I enjoy the atmosphere of a game a lot also. Where it is located, what era does it fit in, and what mood music brings to it.

This is where music becomes a defining factor for me in the game, in the atmosphere.

Level structure, you mean? That's technically also a facet of good level design.

By the way, Duck, Tetris doesn't really have ' levels '.

Not levels, but it has varying degrees of difficulty...which some might consider levels...

Level structure is just another word for ' level sequence '.

gameplay, that's basically the core and without it you ain't got a game you got a movie. plus a lot of my favourite games or aspects of games are just built around game mechanics with not a lot of focus on story (mario kart, pokemon go, shiny hunting in main series pokemon, fifa etc.)

No splode Sherlock Bones. I disagree anyway, mechanics can and ideally should help tell the game's story, they should be an extension of the rest of the game's themes.

Sherlock Bones is the Sploder adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, ' no splode ' being directed towards Sherlock Holmes, as a sarcastic retort to his surface level findings.

It all depends on the game. Sometimes it can be the music or a certain cutscene or maybe (like in GTA Vice City) just exploring the environment. Or maybe an ending like this

One light, one mind, flashing in the dark, blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts, "For crying out loud!" she said unto me, a free for all, f*ck em all
