[Application] Patrol of the penguins.
« on: February 17, 2013, 12:39 pm »
Hi there! Welcome to my very first review, a personal achievement for myself. Anyway, I was searching through some of mat772’s games, and I found Penguin Patrol. I played it, and I desperately wanted to review it. So for my very first review, I shall be reviewing  Penguin Patrol by mat7772.

Pre-thoughts:

We all know mat7772, A fellow reviewer and a fantastic game maker. Penguin Patrol was made just three days ago, where mat7772 does not make much Physics. I can see by the thumbnail this physics. (I’ll explain about the thumbnail more in the “Thumbnail” category) Right now, I’m questioning if this is going to be an exceptional, or a terrible game. So my expectations are just below average, because mat7772 hasn't made much Physics since this game.

Thumbnail:

By looking at the thumbnail, I can see some pretty decent scenery is involved. The colour's are used good in Penguin Patrol , which I have to say, makes the game look more appealing to me. There is two penguins(One on the right at the bottom and one I can just see in the top left hand corner) so there might be a whole lot of colour blurring right out at me, which most of the time I do enjoy. And I have a feeling I will have to go back and forth, because of the lands in the middle of Penguin Patrol Overall, the thumbnail looks quite interesting, despite its minor flaw.

Gameplay:

The gameplay was great, not fantastic, not good, but great. I found the gameplay was enjoyable and nice and action packed. The only thing I didn't quite enjoy was the land as I have already said. I found that quite average, but not as if I was going to fall asleep because of the colour To me, the land was to curvy for myself, and I just wanted to get it over and done with. Everything else I found enjoyable. So despite the bore of the land design, I found the gameplay great.

Review:

I have to say, Penguin Patrol is a special Platformer. I shall no longer be questioning if mat7772’s physics after playing this. Penguin Patrol is a stand out game. I have to say, this game is impressive when it comes to adventure. It has a fantastic adventurous aspect to it. I really can see all the care mat7772 put into Penguin Patrol. But there was a minor flaw, The colour and the layout of the game, but I’m sure this was an accident. As for the length, it was average. It took me somewhere around the six to twelve minute mark for other people to beat the game. But, the game design was quite short, but since you have to travel around the game it extend's the time.

As for the enemy placement, it was perfect. There was no problems or minor issues, at some spots it seemed a bit plain, and could’ve done with some weak enemies apart from the bombing to get a bit more of your health down before you reach the next level, when things start to get more complicated. But as for the choice of enemies, it was great. It related to the story line. Anyway, great enemy placement and fantastic selections of enemies.

Let’s talk about the fantastic scenery Penguin Patrol had! In each parts of the game, the scenery was great. Looking onto the land I could see some great great designs the game included. It attracted my attention, Mat7772 stunned me with the beautiful pattern he used. Such beautiful colours, and then such a disturbing background. Congratulations Mat7772! You had me staring at that colour for a long period of time…

Penguin Patrol didn't have much puzzles in it. One puzzle was the bombing of the game, Other than that, no puzzles! Altogether, the one puzzle was simple, but some of the other great things made up for the lack in puzzles. As for traps, there was nothing much on the game, So altogether, one puzzle and no traps.

Pros:

Scenery: The great scenery design was lovely to look at. I would not have been more pleased then that fantastic design mat7772 made me play through.

Story: The story to Penguin Patrol was not much of a story. It was not related to the game much, which was not nice to see,But the game did not really need a story I guess.

Enemy placement and selection: Mat7772 placed great enemies in spaces. Also, great enemy selection. The enemy selection relates to the story that it had.

Cons: There was not any con's in the game apart from the background was A bit too plain for myself.

Ratings:

Action: 4.5/5 Penguin Patrol has some fantastic action. Great action was provided for me. So thumbs up, the action gets a 4.5.

Placement: 4.5/5. What was a let down was the extra lives I talked about before. But seeming as other people have trouble, I can’t take away as much points. Other than that, placement was pretty darn good.

Puzzles and traps: 1/5. One very simple puzzle! Yep, just one. Other than that, all the other things were fabulous (Well, almost) and made up for the lack of puzzles.

Difficulty: 4.5/5. I did not pass the first level other's did but it was not for me. The reason this happened was of that greatly placed Enemy's. It would always kill me when I tried, and after that I threw a temper tantrum.

Overall: 4/5.

Conclusion:

Overall, Penguin Patrol was an epic game. The reason why it got four out of five was because of the lack of puzzles. More puzzles could have been added to the game, but Mat7772 didn't place them their. But still, Penguin Patrol is a special Physics.

Feature worthy? Yes. I thought that there wasn't enough puzzles. Their could have been at least one trap as well, like a simple trap like this. But otherwise the game was A great physics and was obviously feature worthy.

Comments and opinions will be appreciated.
-The awesome thank me.

-The dumb smite me.

What a breath of fresh air. I'm no recruiter but I recently finished my fifth application and I've been looking at others. For the most part, they were very sub-par, until I can across this one. This is a lengthy review but at no point was it boring due to the good reasoning and unique structure. Better than mine at least. Anyway, I hope you get accepted!

A very rough review.  But you have potential.  You look for the right things but expressing them is the issue.  Sentence structure was terrible in some parts, no offense.  The first paragraph for example was a very difficult read.  Your organization was off as well.  You had game play outside of the actual review section?  Also, you stretched out areas that didn't need much explanation ex. the thumbnail paragraph.  Some games can be good and simple.  Penguin Patrol doesn't need things about puzzles because the game isn't a puzzle game.  So just work on fixing your sentence structure, cleaning up your organization, and remember what type of game you're reviewing.  You're on the right path.
