To be an American could mean you are anywhere from Canada to Chile.

An American can live anywhere in the world. They just need to be an American citizen.

Not quite. This is true for the majority but it is possible to become an American without originating from America or being born in it for that matter.

Actually the politically correct term for somebody from the United States of America IS American.

People from Chile are called Chilean, people from Brazil are Brazilian, etc. Yes, they're all from the Americas, but that's not what you call them.

We don't call all people from Asia Asians, because people from China are called Chinese, Malaysians are Malaysians, Koreans are Koreans, etc.

We might as well just call all of us Earthlings. ;)
