Okay just wondering (about HTML in these forums)
« on: August 26, 2012, 03:57 pm »
SMF supports HTML technically, in fact, it has an option to enable simple HTML tags from being used by normal users:
Proof

So why it isn't enabled? It blocks tags that can be used abusively and only has tags that could be used in BBCode as well. Enabling HTML along BBCode will reduce a lot of confusion.

Because we could just use the BBCode shortcuts to make our coding that much faster.

I wouldn't call BBCode a shortcut in any way. It's practically another type of markup language.

The buttons are different, but the HTML enabling would reduce a lot of confusion. I see earlier threads about putting HTML along with BBCode, imho it's a good idea. (And it's technically possible, as I proved.)

I agree. I think we should have a forum option in which a member decides which type of mark-up language he/she prefers. I personally think HTML is less limited, and also more fun to use TBH.

Or just use both, we don't need that option. We could use both inside a same post. It would be awesome.

It doesn't sound realistic in my opinion. If it's possible, yes, it will be awesome; but something makes me doubt two types of scripting could coincide efficiently in one post.

It would work unless they are nested or something, or maybe it could work no matter what.

We're not talking about the past. Geoff doesn't have to go back to anything. This is the future of our forums.

That may be so, but no modern site that I seen uses HTML anymore.

Actually...
*pushes glasses up nose*
I think you'll find that almost every website nowadays uses HTML language to create their web-pages.

Because we could just use the BBCode shortcuts to make our coding that much faster.
BBcode is not in my muscle memory, so it takes a fair amount of time longer to write out for me, and you would still be able to use BBcode if you like it better, it is the best of both worlds for people like you and me.
Or maybe you should just deal with it insted of asking to go back to our past like those nubs with vanilla:/
It wouldn't be "going back to the past" because we would keep what we had in the "future," it would just be a legacy feature for people who want it.
Tell that to him, HTML is outdated.
Technically, BBcode is just code that is changed into HTML when the post is made, so it is actually slower. Also note that it isn't even a real useful scripting language as almost every forum software has very different variations on it.
That may be so, but no modern site that I seen uses HTML anymore.
Html and/or XHTML are used in every single web page you go on, open up the developer tools in Internet explorer, Inspect element in Google Chrome, the Web Tools in Firefox, they all show HTML because that is the language used on every website and the one those browsers can understand natively without plugins or addons.

Well I noticed that this site has more catorgorys and more rules, but the are basically the same, even the titles on each group.

Forums usually follow a usual format, one thing I liked about vanilla was how it was different.

The only reason I didn't complain when others did, was because I like to focus more on the future then the past, in a nutshell, history is a waste of my time.

It is important to use the past to guide you in the future.

Lol HTML is not history xD As ravicalesalt said, BBCode is converted to HTML, and in fact, all sites are coded with HTML today (the PHP and ASP things are just HTML that includes those languages in some form). HTML is not actually outdated.

I have seen no downsides of switching HTML on to co-operate with BBCode. If you notice any, please say.

Can't still find a reason why we shouldn't enable HTML to work co-operatively with BBCode.
